At work
Andrew’s university education focused on the UK financial services industry. After completing his studies, he moved swiftly on to a career as a financial adviser in the retail banking sector, around 25 years ago.
Andrew began his career training and then working for a well-known building society. Later, he enjoyed a successful role as a financial planner for the biggest banking group in the country.
Around 10 years ago, Andrew took the decision to become an independent financial adviser. It’s very important to Andrew that he’s working for his clients and not a large organisation, hence the move to become independent.
Over the course of his career, Andrew has specialised in protection (or life assurance), investments, and then retirement planning and pension advice.
Andrew has helped hundreds of clients plan for and enter their retirement. From ex-coal miners and surgeons to engineers and accountants, Andrew’s experience, expertise, and adaptable style can accommodate a wide range of people.
What makes Andrew feel most proud is whenever he receives a referral from one of his clients, which makes him feel very happy about himself.
Andrew says: “I was once caught out at the supermarket, having left my wallet at home. But I was saved by a very kind gentleman who I’d helped out years before with his pension. He saw what was happening from the next checkout, and offered to pay for my shopping. Fancy that! Of course I paid him back, but that kind gesture shows the impression good financial advice can leave on someone.”
The things Andrew loves most about his job are:
- Meeting people and building an understanding with them over time
- Working from his home office and travelling all around the region
- Being able to really help people when they need it.
Andrew has met thousands of people throughout his career. He says: “Some people are more challenging than others, but I’ve found the vast majority are pleasant to work with. The clients that I enjoy working with the most are those that are patient and understand what they want to achieve in life.”
At home
Andrew has a wide range of interests, including football, golf, music, and angling.
He also enjoys cooking, gardening, woodwork, and DIY – he’s spent the past three years renovating a house.
The thing Andrew enjoys doing the most in his spare time is playing the guitar. During lockdown, he built a 1959 Gibson Les Paul, which kept him busy for months… and saved him around £5,000!
